The Puerto Rico Crisis: A Reflection of a Flawed US Democracy

The Fair Observer must have recognized my talents when they decided to choose another one of my photos for their online publication. This photo was taken during the protests in 2019 in Puerto Rico known as “El Verano del 19” or The Summer of 2019. This was a time when the then Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, was involved in a social media scandal that ultimately forced him to resign from office in August of 2019. Ricardo Rossello, along with some members of his own cabinet, had participated in a private chat via the messaging service Telegram where they allegedly had some unkind words for people in Puerto Rico. This coming just two years after the Hurricane Maria disaster of 2017.

Although some may dismiss the Summer of 2019 as just another set of protests in Puerto Rico, I believe this accurately showed the anger, distrust, and frustration of the Puerto Rican people who have had to live in a Puerto Rico where nothing works, everything is broken, and no one wants to be held accountable.

The photo was taken in the middle of a massive protest held on the busiest highway in San Juan, PR. It shows two women holding a placard asking for Governor Ricardo Rossello to resign immediately. Rossello resigned in early August of 2019.
